(Also known as the BHRA)

Are you a certified HCOP official who has just moved to Barrie, Ontario (new to the area)?

You need to register with our Referee's Association (the BHRA) in order to receive BMHA (HL, A, AA) or AAA ice hockey assignments in Barrie. Complete our BHRA Registration Form and send it to Sue McManus (local officials assignor). You also need to attend our monthly referees meetings (see Referee's News) and pay your local BHRA dues to our associations Treasurer.

The BHRA was started in 2001 by individuals interested in improving the fellowship of officials in Barrie, and in the surrounding areas. Although there was a referee's association in the Barrie area previously, it was not active any longer. In addition, they wanted to assist with the training and development of ice hockey officials with improved organization, training and communication. This Association came about as the results of their efforts.

The BHRA would like to acknowledge eight people for their contribution to refereeing in local hockey: 
Larry Ness, Darrell Langille, Mike Ferguson, Rick Ahern, Mike Hawboldt, Susan Hewitt, Doug Burns, and Aaron Harris

At the inception of this Association, 130 officials were members.

The Barrie Hockey Referees Association (BHRA) does not administer Hockey Canada's referee certification program (HCOP). This is the responsibility of provincial governing associations (the Ontario Minor Hockey Association in our area). All local clinics are coordinated and scheduled by the OMHA, all information is provided by the OMHA, all fees are paid to the OMHA, all evaluations and promotions are handled by OMHA supervisors, and all clinics are instructed by OMHA Instructors. You CAN NOT register for any OMHA clinic through the BHRA, or through the BMHA office.

However the BHRA has instituted training programs to assist our OMHA supervisors with the development of young ice hockey officials here in Barrie.

Our officials referee for leagues affiliated with Hockey Canada and the Ontario Hockey Federation. Our minor hockey officials referee in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) Region 4G (ETA Region 6) for various minor hockey organizations found in the greater Barrie area such as the Barrie Minor Hockey Association (BMHA), Oro, Essa and Innisfil Minor Hockey Associations. Officials who improve have the opportunity to referee Select and Representative levels of hockey (AE, A & AA) found in the Simcoe Region, York Simcoe and AAA Eastern Triple A hockey leagues in addition to High School hockey. We also have officials who referee College, Women's Hockey, Adult Recreational leagues and Military Hockey.

Some of our senior referees officiate Junior hockey in the OHA, OHL, and University. We also are fortunate to have dedicated supervisors in the area including some who have returned to minor hockey after careers at the IIHF, Olympic and NHL level.

The BHRA holds regular monthly meetings in Barrie during the ice hockey season. We have an ongoing Mentoring Program (training), and with the sponsorship of the Barrie Minor Hockey Association we hold several on-ice training sessions each fall, for our newer younger officials.

Our goal is to pass on the knowledge we have obtained to up and coming officials, and to continue the Tradition of Excellence established by those who officiated from our area before us.
